Science is everything. Science deals with the search for knowledge about the universe and all that is in it. It is both a body of knowledge concerning the world about us, and a set of skills that are used to explore our universe.
Science has changed our lives and is vital to the world's future. All students should be taught the essential aspects of the knowledge, methods, processes, uses and impacts of science on the world and environment. Through building up a body of key knowledge and ideas pupils should be encouraged to understand how science can be used to explain what is occurring, predict how things will behave and analyse causes. They should be equipped with the knowledge required to understand the uses and implications of science today and for the future.
In Years 7, 8 & 9 students will have the chance to build upon the work that they will have done in primary schools where they have begun to explore more about the universe around them. We study the living world around us (Biology), the physical world around us (Physics) and the substances that make up the world around us (Chemistry). All students have the chance to have hands-on experience in investigating some of the fundamental ideas in Science through practical work and demonstrations. Our students are encouraged to ask questions about their universe and think about how scientists of the past have found answers to some of these big questions. We think about the effect that humans have had on our planet and how Science can help to find solutions to some of the most pressing matters of our (and future) generations.
At KS4 students dig further into the big ideas about Science that they started in KS3. The Science disciplines at KS4 are separated into Biology, Chemistry and Physics and we explore each one in more detail, while always looking at common threads and ideas. Students have the chance to develop their practical Science skills in each of the subjects while working towards their GCSE qualification. We explore some of the greatest scientific developments of the past and consider the science of the future.
Approximately 50% of KS4 students follow the Separate Sciences route (also known as Triple Sciences) and 50% of KS4 students follow the Trilogy Sciences route (also known as Combined Science). A small number of students each year are also selected to complete the Entry Level qualification. We use the AQA exam board for all Science subjects.
